Ponty do the double over Tonna

Ponty welcomed Tonna to the Oakwood fortress on a glorious summers day, who after losing to Ponty at home were no doubt after revenge.

Tonna brought a huge heavy pack of forwards to the Oakwood and started with a bang, scoring 12 points in as many minutes. Ponty were shell shocked at the Tonna start but slowly composed themselves and started to analyze how to get advantage over Tonna? Ponty quickly worked out that the best option was to move the big heavy Tonna pack around the field by playing with width, hoping that in heat that the forwards would tire.

This instantly paid off with some slick handling saw Ponty progress into the Tonna 22 and a nice blindside move saw Matthew Hooper go over in the corner for the first Ponty score.

Ponty now playing with width were starting to gain more territory and possession and forced Tonna into conceding a penalty which was duly taken by Morgan Kennerley.

Half-time Pontrhydyfen 8 Tonna 12

Tonna started the second half in the same manner as the first half, but Ponty this time were ready for the onslaught, defending on their own try line for 10 mins, they kept out Tonna with great defense and discipline. In fact Ponty were first to score  in the second half, by the boot of Morgan Kennerley after Tonna gave away a penalty, score 11-12.

Ponty now sensing that Tonna were tiring as they did in the first half, were now exerting pressure their forwards. Ponty worked their way up field again with some slick handling and a deft grubber kick by Matthew Hooper saw Morgan Kennerley quickest on to the ball to score, Ponty now taking the lead and control of the game, score 16-12 to Ponty.

Ponty now had a good period of possesion and territory but then gifted Tonna a try, when a crossfield kick was caught by the Tonna winger for him to run 80 yards to score unopposed, putting Tonna back in front 16-19 against the run of play.

This galvansided the Ponty players and a few stern words about ball retention saw Ponty go straight back down to the Tonna 22, for Josh Ford to power over scoring right in the corner, the conversion was duly taken, right out on the touchline, by Morgan Kennerley taking the score to 23-19. Tonna now knowing they needed a try to win, but to Ponty's credit the kept Tonna deep in thier own half to close out the game and gain the double over thier local rivals.

This was game where Ponty were the deserved winners as it was a game won by brains and not brawn. Excellent performance from all involved.
