Ponty too strong for Brackla

On a cold, wet morning, Ponty were the visitors to Brackla RFC as the first game of the return fixtures in league. Brackla currently bottom of the league and Ponty placed in 4thwith a game in hand, so the coaches were looking for a bonus point win to move up the league.

Ponty started strong and dominated territory and possession with some tactical kicking and powerful forward drives.

Ponty opened the scoring from lineout when fly half Craig Williams gave a flat pass for centre Dan Owen to burst through the first line of defence and drew the Brackla fullback and perfectly weighted pass gave his centre partner Warren Davies an unopposed run to the try line, converted by full back Morgan Kennerley 0-7 to Ponty.

The second try was all down to the forwards, from a penalty kick deep into the Brackla 22 saw the Ponty pack claim the ball from the resulting line out and after several pick & go’s saw Josh Ford power over from 5 yards out to score, 0-12.

The third try was from a powerful scrum drive, number 8 Tom Davies picked up at the base and run at the Brackla 10 and while half tackled managed to off load to fly half Craig Williams, who ran an intelligent support line, to cross the whitewash.

Ponty now sensing a bonus point win continued the second half in the same manner as the first half. And it didn’t take too long to secure the bonus point win, Warren Davies gliding through the Brackla defence to score his second of the game, duly converted by Morgan Kennerley, score now 0-24.

The fifth was a real beauty, one the Australian backline would’ve been proud of, from a Ponty scrum 20 yards out from the Brackla try line, the ball was passed down the line, scrum half (Leigh Morgan) to fly half (Morgan Kennerley), first a decoy run from outside centre (Dan Owen), pass around the back to inside centre (Jamie Miller), long pass to winger(Matthew Hooper), switch from winger to fullback (Nathan Smith), full-back to fly half, draw last man to put replacement centre Jamie Miller in the corner for a cracking backs try.

Not to be outdone, the forwards finished the game in style with the sixth try, scored in typical forward fashion, kick to the corner, secure line out then driving maul, for Capt. Rhys Curtis to break off and score in the corner.

Coaches will be very pleased with a 6 try victory, but will be more pleased about keeping Brackla to a nil score with excellent defence and great game management. Week off next week, so everyone will be refreshed for our next league game Cwmtwrch away on the 28th Jan.

Well done to all involved, supporters man of the match was Lloyd Hayden.
